IUGR or Intra uterine growth restriction is a condition in which the baby is not growing as expected in the womb. There are two ways in which growth restriction can occur, one is the entire bosy is relatively smaller than a standard baby of the same gestational age, also known as symmetrical IUGR and the other is asymmetrical IUGR in which the baby’s head and brains are of the right size but the rest of the body has not grown as expected.

During an ultrasound, the cause of IUGR can be determines and further tests can be order to further pinpoint the reason behind stunted growth, such as screening the mothers for infections, monitoring fetal heart and movements and also sometimes an amniocentesis might be ordered to determine any genetic cause behind it.
