What is Color Doppler Scan?

Color Doppler is an ultrasound scan used to diagnose blood flow in the baby. This performed between 28-32 weeks of pregnancy to detect restricted blood flow or clots. The report of Doppler Ultrasound helps to view the blood movement in the fetus. A handheld instrument named transducer is used to do this scan. Doctors at Radon Imaging & Diagnostics perform this scan to diagnose blood flow in the heart and brain, placental blood flow and fetal umbilical blood flow. This is not a mandatory scan and is advised on clinical grounds if any complications were detected or the mother has some other health concerns.

What is Doppler scan used for?

Color Doppler scan is used to track the blood flow in the fetus. The ultrasound can also be used to do the following:

  • Find blood clots.
  • Check the blood movement in the heart, brain, arteries and veins.
  • Detect any blocked arteries.
  • Looking for Aneurysm which is a bulge in the artery.

Why is a Doppler scan recommended?

There are certain symptoms that can complicate the pregnancy and are indicating towards a severe condition that needs treatment. The symptoms that indicate for a Doppler scan are:

  • Numbness in the legs.
  • Painful cramps in hips or legs during daily activities.
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Swelling in legs, abdomen or feet.
  • If a women had a stroke.
  • Any prior blood vessel injury.
